PROGRAMS & SERVICES

Indian Times Newspaper : The newspaper is published by NASP. In addition to the campus paper, the Indian Times Newspaper covers local and national American Indian news. A calendar of events is included in the paper. The paper provides an excellent opportunity for students to gain journalistic skills.

Mountain Hawk Jr. Singers:
The group practices during lunch hour in front of the NASP office. Diverse students participate in the sessions and perform at various events on and off campus. The purpose of the group is to learn American Indian and other Indigenous songs so that songs are carried on.

Medicine Ways Conference and Gathering of Indigenous Nations: The conference is a gathering of traditional medicine men/women and leaders from throughout the United States.  In addition, prominent leaders are invited to speak on contemporary issues that affect the Indian people in the United States. Each year the students of the Native American Student Association create the theme and coordinate both of these events. Over three thousand individuals participate in the two-day event.

Native American Film Workshops: These workshops are provided for students to discuss and learn about how Native Americans are portrayed through all Media. In addition, current and past issues are discussed relative to the film.

Spirit of the Tribes 5K Run/Walk : Come join us for a morning full of culture, fun, and exercise for family and friends. The Spirit of the Tribes 5K is a fundraising event for UC Riverside student scholarships. Through these scholarships and programs it is our hope that we can strengthen the prospect of Native American youth in pursuit of a higher education. There will be three races; A 5K Run/Walk, 1K Kid’s Fun Run, and a 1/2K Kid’s Fun Run. The Spirit of the Tribes 5K Run/Walk traverses throughout the UC Riverside Campus giving a tour of the campus for all the 5K participants. Sign up as an individual or recruit your friends, family, or co-workers to join you on a team made of 5 individuals.

Gathering of the Tribes Summer Residential Program: This exciting week-long program is designed to give American Indian, Middle and High school students, an opportunity to obtain computer, writing skills, and learn about the American Indian history. At the same time, they will learn about university/college admission requirements and financial aid. There will be various special guest speakers and performances that will motivate students to excel. In addition, the students will experience campus life and develop social and team building skills. Physical exercise will be an important part of the program, which is necessary to have a good mind and a balanced life. Students will have fun while learning and developing these skills.

Indian Time : Indian Time is a radio program sponsored by NASA and NASP on KUCR, 88.3 FM every Thursday at 5:30 p.m. until 6:30p.m. Students, Staff, Alumni, and Community members get together and have a good time trying out their broadcasting skills. They play Indian music, and talk about past and current Indian issues.
College Information Day: At this one-day event, local high school students, parents, counselors, and teachers are invited to learn more about educational and career opportunities for American Indians. Admission requirements and financial aid information are the focus of this event. Following the presentation, UCR’s NASA members give them a tour of the campus.

Counseling- Academic/Personal:
We assist students in providing them the resources that are available to them based on their needs.

Heritage Trace Program: In this program we help students find their roots. Many students come to us excited and yearning for knowledge of their past and heritage. We have many resources that allow our students to embrace their native side.


Financial Aid Assistance:
We attend schools to provide them with the latest information on how to apply for Financial Aid. In addition, when we have school visits here at the UCR campus; we provide a workshop for the students.


Employment Aid Assistance:
When employment opportunities are available we provide our students leads to allow them to apply for jobs.


Community Liaison:
We work with the local tribes on outreach, informational presentations and workshops on UC Riverside, admission requirements, financial aid, and program office.


Outreach Programs-
Our outreach programs consist of one on one meetings with parents and/or students. In addition, we have programs that outreach to groups of people.


Orientation:
During the fall quarter, NASP sponsors a gathering to welcome and provide important information about campus life. Most importantly, students, staff, and faculty get together to get acquainted and establish a support system.


Middle and High School Visits:
The NASP staff and NASA members visit middle and high schools in the local community. Whenever local middle and high schools have a college fair, we attend with a booth of information. Many times, we are asked to give presentations on being Native American and providing historical information. Sometimes we give them cultural presentations by drumming and singing. We also outreach to the students and encourage the students to continue their higher education by attending college or the university.


American Indian Entertainment Night:
This program provides an opportunity for Native American talents in all genres to shine in a night of entertainment. We often invite Native Americans to showcase their talents. This gives the Native American community as well as the UCR campus an opportunity to interact and enrich themselves in a night of fun.

Cultural Presentations: These presentations range in a variety of ways. They go from singing and dancing, to weaving, beading, and feather work. These presentations are given in the NASP office or out in the public on the UCR campus.

Scholarships:
We provide limited Scholarships for students who attend UCR. There is the Gathering of the Tribes Scholarship, Cabazon Scholarship, and the Native American Student Programs Scholarship. The American Indian Scholarship is for students that attend a college/university in California.
