UC Riverside has a history of relevant research with an unbroken string of high-impact scientific innovations from saving crops to pioneering genomics. It is a living laboratory for the exploration of issues critical to growing communities - air, water, energy, transportation, politics, the arts, history and culture.  Enrollment: 16,826 students enrolled in Fall 2006 -- 14,743 undergraduates and 2,083 graduate students. Ethnicity: African American 6.5%, Native American 0.3%, Chicano and Latino 23.2%, Asian/Asian American 39.0%, White/Caucasian 20.8%, other ethnic 2.3%, unknown/decline-to-state 7.9%. Of bachelor's degrees awarded, 58% are completed within four years, 35% within five years, and 7% within six years. Enrollment is projected to grow to about 22,000 students by the year 2015.

Academic Programs: UCR offers Bachelor degree programs in 78 majors, 50 Master's degree programs, 38 PhD. Programs and 17 state teaching credentials. Academic units are: the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences; the College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences; the Marlan and Rosemary Bourns College of Engineering; the A. Gary Anderson Graduate School of Management; and the Graduate School of Education. The Division of Biomedical Sciences partners with UCLA to offer a path to a medical degree. Universit Extension offers contiuning education to the community as well as English Instruction to thousands of international students each year.

Economic Impact: UCR has a combined economic impact in the state of California of nearly $1 billion, with more than 70 percent of this economic activity benefiting the Inland Empire. Community Service: UC Riverside students are dedicated to community service and volunteer activities, as undergraduates and graduate students complete more than 100,000 hours of service each year. There are over 60 student volunteer service organizations, including every campus fraternity and sorority organization, each of which requires some form of community service as a condition of membership. In addition, the University Honors Program requires its participants to complete 10 hours of community service per quarter to successfully complete the program.  The ALPHA Center, in partnership with educational institutions, businesses, and non-profits, prepares students to excel in college and teachers to excel in the classroom with effective teaching methods, especially in the priority areas of mathematics and science. The Center has reached more than 119,400 students, 9,900 teachers and 845 administrators and impacted approximately 190 schools in Riverside, San Bernardino, Imperial and eastern Los Angeles counties. In October 2004, the US Department of Education awarded a five-year $11.5 million grant, the second largest awarded to UCR, to The Graduate School of Education for the development of a science teacher pathway in a project known as Copernicus. Project partners cover a broad spectrum of education leaders, K-12 teachers, institutions of higher education, parents and the business community. UCR's California Center for Native Nations, established in 2003, enhances the relationship between California Indian tribes and the University by fostering research and educational programs of crucial importance to the Native populations. UC Riverside is a member of NCAA Division I and participates in the Big West Conference. The UCR Institute for Integrative Genome Biology is one of the world's leading institutions of genomics research, bringing together campus faculty from many academic units to participate in genomics-based discovery. The Insectary and Quarantine Facility is an advanced laboratory for research in the study of non-native insect pests and evaluation of potential natural enemies as biological control agents. The UCR/UCLA Thomas Haider Program in Biomedical Sciences, Riverside County's only medical program, provides UCR students (including transfer students) exclusive access to 24 medical school seats each year. Students accepted into the UCR/UCLA program complete the first two years of medical school on the UCR campus in an intimate learning environment before moving on to UCLA for the final two years and graduation. Cutting-edge research in the Bourns College of Engineering includes using spider silk to make hollow silica tubes 25,000 times thinner than a human hair, which can boost the resolution of optical microscopes. Researchers have isolated single neuron cells on an electrode, known as "brain-on-a-chip," which may help conquer Alzheimer's disease. The College excels in the development of applications of nanotechnology; alternative-fueled engines and vehicles, the conversion of biomass into vehicle fuel; and biotechnology. www.engr.ucr.edu

The UCR ARTSblock combines the established UCR/California Museum of Photography, the Sweeney Art Gallery and the planned Culver Center for the Arts on one block in downtown Riverside. UC Riverside's Center for Nanoscale Science and Engineering is one of the world leaders in nanotechnology research. Center scientists have garnered accolades for their work on nanoscale electronic devices, spintronic devices, carbon nanotubes, and sensors. www.cnse.ucr.edu

UCR Libraries collections include 2,368,843 volumes, 22,151 serial subscriptions and 1,772,053 microforms, and more than 1,410,700 government information resources, housed in four facilities: The Tómas Rivera Library, including Special Collections, is home to the famed Eaton Collection, the world.s largest cataloged collection of science fiction and fantasy; the Science Library; the Music Library; the Media Library; and the newly established Palm Desert Graduate Center Digital Library and Student Learning Center. With access to more than 317 electronic databases, 14,017 electronic journals, 175 public computers, 2,316 seating spaces and 73 study rooms, the Libraries serve as a portal to the world's store of scholarly information. Citrus is synonymous with the Golden State. UC Riverside's Citrus Experiment Station has developed more than 40 new citrus varieties and helped growers fight pests and diseases for the $850 million per year industry.
